Analyse Political Discourse in One or More of the comedias you have Essay
Analyse Political Discourse in One or More of the comedias you have studied - Essay Example This creates a weakness in the comedy and changes the value of the play as it is depicted in different times. The main association with Vega is not only associated with the politics of the time. More important, Vega is concerned with creating dramatic effects, showing opinions and working as a motivational and entertaining force for the culture of his time period. Fuentovejuna and Political Discourse The comedy by Vega is one which is defined by political discourse first. The play is one which is defined by the time frame in which it is written and the politics which were taking place at this time. The play begins with describing an event which occurred in 1476 in Spain, located in a small village in Fuente Obejuna in Castile. The main depiction is from the Order of Calatrava, who was a commander at the time and which mistreated the villagers by branding and killing them. The massacre which occurred gathered the attention of King Ferdinand II of Aragon to investigate the villagers. E ven when tortured, none would give the information of the ill treatment and would only respond by stating that ââ¬Å"Fuentovejuna did it.â⬠This depiction is then told in Vegaââ¬â¢s description of the play and is shown in the writing from 1612-1614. The main point of this specific event is one which was passed down to several with political discourse, specifically because of the silent rebellion which the peasants took over the king and which didnââ¬â¢t allow the king to have a specific amount of power over the village. The legend became one which was essential in the changes which began to occur in Spain at later dates, specifically with noticed victories that were from the peasants (Edwards, 7). The main depiction of the political discourse is one which is noted throughout the play; however, there are many controversial concepts which are associated with the way in which Vega displays the information. Throughout the play, Vega uses specific characters to represent the historical incident and to show what has occurred during this time frame. However, the discourse is one which is combined with both comedy and with opinions of what has occurred during this time. The result is the understanding of what has occurred with representations of what the politics meant during this time as well as what was most important to the author. More important, more universal themes, such as justice, ending the incident and developing the plot and character become more relevant than the political facts which are associated with the play (Blue, 295). The opinion and the discourse as one which is specific to universal themes and opinions throughout the play are seen from the first portion of the play. For instance, when the commander is speaking about the king, he speaks not of the history which occurred during this incident, but instead alludes to the opinions of the ruler and what was expected during this time. ââ¬Å"Grand Master Don Rodrigo / Tellez Giron, you who have been bourne to this exalted station by the valor of that famous father of yours who, when you were eight, renounced the position of Master in your favorâ⬠¦ understand that your honor demands that in this situation you adhere to your kinsmenââ¬â¢

Should English be made the official language of the United States Research Paper
Should English be made the official language of the United States Consider Amy Tans article "Mother Tongue" - Research Paper Example English should be made the official language of the United States because a majority of the Americans speak English, this will encourage cultural assimilation and unity in the nation and it is economical to have only one official language. English does need to be made the official language of the United States because a majority of the Americans can and do speak English. English happens to be the most popular and most spoken language in the nation (Bailey 128). If English is not given a predominant status in the United States, it will give way to chaos because most of the people here can only speak English. Besides, not only in America, but English after Mandarin also happens to be the most used and spoken language in the world. The other thing is that the United States is the home to an array of cultures, ethnicities and races. In other words this nation is the land of diversity. In the presence of such rich diversity, it is important that the country does have a unifying factor that unites its entire population hailing from diverse linguistic backgrounds (Mair 170). Thereby declaring English to be the official language of the United States will aid assimilation and unity in the nation. It will encourage the varied people affiliated to diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds to learn English so that they could become an integral part of this great nation. Yes, it is understandable that one needs to respect and encourage diversity. Yet, it is also important that there exist unifying influences that bring in cohesion amongst diversity and multiculturalism. In that context the English language could act as the unifying factor that could bind the whole nation together. Every year the nation spends millions of dollars translating the public and private documents into varied languages because it does not have an official language and ââ¬Å"trimming the translation budget (Crystal 12)â⬠is a big problem.

Departmental Meeting Report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Departmental Meeting Report - Essay Example On Wednesday the 17th of September, we held a department care plan meeting together with the MDS coordinator, the nurse and social worker to discuss the discharge plans with patients. Four patients were scheduled for discharge three of which were males and one female. Patients were brought to the meeting on their wheel chairs. After everyone present introduced themselves the meeting began and the pre-discharge plans were discussed. The therapist addressed the various issues the patients as well as every other member might need to know while the social worker addressed the plan of discharge including preparation for discharge. It was noted for instance the patients could need walkers as the go home. Overall care plan was also discussed in the meeting under the coordination of the nurse. Issues stressed included the importance of individualized informal meetings with patients and their families at different stages of their care plan which should focus on rehabilitation so as to guarantee a safe professional discharge for patients. Teamwork is very important for success of care plans and the importance of interdepartmental meetings was noted as a strategy to foster a team approach at haven discharge plans with each patient, informing patients of their recovery stage as well as how they are progressing with therapy. We also discussed collaborating with patientsââ¬â¢ families to share information as not all the patients were given the date of discharge. This was informed by the fact that discharge date and communication of such information to patients depends on their stage of therapy and as such only those patients deemed ready were given the discharge
Privacy Rights in Domestic Relations Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Privacy Rights in Domestic Relations - Case Study Example According to some, the case was decided fairly, and within the boundaries of constitutionality and fairness. However, to others, it was a monstrous atrocity committed in the name of upholding the constitution. Much of this opposition came from the pro-lifers who saw this as a reaffirmation of a law that promoted what was tantamount to mass murder in their eyes. The laws were seen by ââ¬Å"Pro-choicersâ⬠as a burden to women and aimed at creating restrictions, which resulted in the embarrassment that would eventually force women to carry the unwanted pregnancy to term. The case is significant in helping to show that the abortion law in America contrary to popular belief is more of constitutional than family law. This is underscored in that the only clause that was struck out from the five was the one requiring a woman to show evidence of her husbandââ¬â¢s acquiescence to the operation. This was done on the basis that it occasions an undue burden on the woman, and may interfer e with the womanââ¬â¢s freedom to have an abortion (4LawSchool.com, n.d.). In this case, the issue of privacy is unequivocally relevant since those who had brought it forward wanted women to be able to have abortions on the strength of their own convictions, without being forced to consult their spouses of parents. Prior to the ruling, a married woman could not have simply had an abortion without her husbandââ¬â¢s concept. Yet the fetus was in her and any health implications would be on her besides, a pregnancy will interfere with the womanââ¬â¢s life more than the manââ¬â¢s (Lloyd, 2011). Furthermore, the child might not be the husbands hence the need for an abortion. The disclosure would have traumatized the woman, and she may have carried the pregnancy to term rather than own up. The same case applied to minors having to seek permission from their parents. This amounts to an invasion of their privacy since if a girl has problems communicating with her parents, she may end up keeping the pregnancy until it was too late out of fear. Had I been a j udge in the trial, I would have struck down all the five requirements because abortion is allowed; there is no reason for it to be made harder for women than it has to be.Ã

Disparate Impact Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Disparate Impact - Essay Example aving high school diploma on the city by following the disparate impact theory of liability to prove its business requirement ââ¬â not just a ploy to single out certain groups of society from getting employment (Lazarus, 2001). The Supreme Court first described the disparate impact theory in 1971, in Griggs v. Duke Power Co., 401 U.S. 424, 431-2 (1971): Title VII. It ââ¬Å"proscribes not only overt discrimination but also practices that are fair in form, but discriminatory in operation. The touchstone is business necessity. . . . [G]ood intent or absence of discriminatory intent does not redeem employment procedures or testing mechanisms that operate as built-in headwinds for minority groups and are unrelated to measuring job capability.â⬠In 1989, the Supreme Court minimized the defendantââ¬â¢s burden of proving business necessity to a burden of producing proof of business requirement in the case of Wards Cove Packing Co. v. Antonio, 490 U.S. Later, the Civil Rights Act of 1991 annulled that part of the Wards Cove decision (HR Guide 2001). "Disparate impact" is a legal theory for proving unlawful employment discrimination. But in practice, ââ¬Å"disparate treatmentâ⬠theory is practiced. Disparate impact is a thought that some recruitment practices adversely impact a group or community of people than the others. In the example of US Supreme Court Title VII case on the issue of disparate impact, in a particular case of employing laborers, the applicants needed to be high school diploma holders. This condition weeded out more blacks than whites, although there was no such intention on the part of the employer to discriminate against blacks. But as a result of the condition, there was a disparate impact on a particular race (Runkel, 2006). According to the Supreme Court, if the employees raise such a concern, the responsibility of proving the usefulness of the high school diploma lies with the employer, having ââ¬Å"a manifest relationship to the employment in question.ââ¬

Microeconomic Issue of Social Importance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Microeconomic Issue of Social Importance - Essay Example On the other hand, the suggestion too from the literature is that cigarettes are addictive, and so the demand may in fact be somewhat inelastic. This means that it may be that driving up prices through taxation may not curb consumption as the authorities hope. Some studies suggest this somewhat, even as those studies also suggest that demand is elastic for young smokers, new smokers, and those who have low income. In the long run, therefore, as the population turns over, demand should go down due to taxation leading to higher cigarette prices. The issue at hand is the determination of exactly how cigarette taxation impacts demand, such as in terms of the demographic characteristics of the market response to the taxation and other related aspects of demand. In general, in terms of supply and demand, we see from recent data and from insights from the literature that taxation has a large dampening effect on overall demand for cigarettes (Chaloupka;; Meier and Licari; Wasserman et al.). The overall take from the academic literature is that taxation does curb consumption. Moreover, the higher the price increases resulting from higher taxes, the greater the reductions in demand and consumption. Other insights include that demand is more sensitive to price reductions rather than price increases. This means that reducing taxes can increase demand by a greater amount. This is in comparison to the reduction in demand from the same level of tax reductions. To illustrate, say taxes go down by 10 percent, and demand goes up by say 20 percent. Going the other way, if taxes go up by 10 percent, the demand does not go down by 20 percent, but just by half, at 10 percent for cigarettes. These and other insights are useful in understanding the microeconomic aspects of the impacts of taxation on cigarette consumption and economics. The rest of the paper explores these impacts more closely (Sylvain; Bader et al.). Data from 2012 strongly supports the

Globalization and South Korea Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Globalization and South Korea - Essay Example Ever since the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) came into effect in the 90's and the World Trade Organization was established with a mandate to regulate and intervene in the disputes arising out of globalization, the world economy has been integrated in a way that has surpassed the earlier attempts. This is noteworthy, as contrary to popular belief, trade and commerce between nations has always been the case since the first ships carrying silk, spices and muslin from the east and other exotic stuff from the west has set forth for each other's shores. In fact, the famous voyage of Christopher Columbus is a testament to the ability of nations to seek out markets other than their own for trade. Though the world was integrated in colonial times as well, the process received a setback in the 21st century in the intervening period between the two world wars. It was only after the establishment of the Bretton Woods system that the world economy started regaining some of its int erconnectedness. And the demise of alternatives to capitalism and the free market system ensured that all countries with a desire to alleviate poverty and raise the standard of living of the peoples would invariably turn to trade and commerce and utilize the "theory of comparative advantage"iii as proposed by the noted economist David Ricardo. Globalization as a phenomenon cannot be avoided. Despite the setbacks to the process by the events in the aftermath of 9/11, Globalization continues its inexorable march adding new strands to its already well-knit thread. The successes of India and China in this decade and the successes of the so-called "Tiger economies" of South East Asia in the previous decades are proof that globalization works. The Real Issues Covering Globalization Procedures There are numerous studies that pertain to the reasons behind the reality of the actual events of the worldwide events regarding the issue of underdeveloped countries. There have also been numerous theories designed through the said studies to be able to explain the reason behind the issue being discussed herein. For instance, John Degnbol-Martinussen said in his book Aid: Understanding International Development Cooperation, "the foreign relations between many countries worldwide mainly depend upon the economic status of each state. The ability to be n relation with other countries is usually dependent upon the fact that a country is required to have a certain considerable economic status in the world economy" (13). Saying this, Martinussen simply shows how the present society measures a country's status through its economic status. This is mainly the reason behind the fact that there exist three divisions of economic class in the global setting of economic scale. Basing from the dep endency theory, it could be identified that among the reason behind the status of underdeveloped countries is the fact that many poor sectors of the global economy remain as suppliers to the developed states. They serve as mere support to the 'bigger or larger sectors' of the human generation. The fact that proves the said theory is its basis upon the actual occurrences today regarding the oppression of the poor. True, to be able to remain wealthy, many developed countries depend upon the underdeveloped ones for raw materials and resources for several
